Hilo Elks announce scholarship opportunity
The Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks invests in our nation’s future by helping deserving students attend the colleges of their dreams. This year, the Elks National Foundation will fund nearly $3.6 million in college scholarships through its different scholarship programs, the most significant being the foundation’s Most Valuable Student Scholarship.
The MVS will award $2.3 million, giving students a chance to earn a college education without incurring insurmountable loans. Competition is under way, with a Dec. 7 application deadline. Scholarships will lessen the cost of college tuition for 500 deserving students, with the 18 top winners receiving grants from $8,000 to $60,000. The remaining 482 runners-up receive $4,000 scholarships.
This scholarship is available to all high school seniors who are United States citizens. Applicants do not need to be related to a member of the Elks. Males and females compete separately, and are judged on scholarship, leadership and financial need.
Applicants residing on the east side of the Big Island must turn in their completed applications to the Hilo Elks Lodge no later than Dec. 7. The 500 national winners will be announced in late April.
Applications for the 2013 contest are available at the Hilo Lodge, and at www.elks.org/enf/scholars. For more details, please call the lodge at 935-1717.
